Attendance: Carin Lilly, Dan Carr, Greg Fanslow, Judith Mueller, Guido Masse, Siobhan, Holly, Rebecca, Dawn and Liz along with contributing ideas from Kerrie Mathes, Al Johnson, Mark Cline Lucey and Sarah Brown. As the weather warms the teachers along with several parents have been talking a lot about ways to develop our backyard play space. Last year Kerrie Mathes volunteered many hours helping us grow a garden and maintain some sweet flower beds. We enjoyed these changes so much we wanted to see if we could organize around some long-range planning that included the whole community in the process. We had an inspired Community Meeting on Wed, March 27th where we brainstormed our intial ideas and plans which organized around a strong nature-based theme. We reviewed many playscape photographs (collected off Pinterest and blogs like http://www.letthechildrenplay.net/search/label/backyard) and we discussed the central interests of the children: slides, water play, swings, tunnels and constructing with loose parts. In addition we valued the idea of establishing edible gardening. We realize that finding a balance between permanent and moveable structures will be important as we plan for materials and work days. Our hope is to have first renovations realized in time for Fare Thee Well (Friday, June 21st). So there is no time to waste! We identified a list of materials and are asking for your help in the design, resourcing, building, and documenting our new outdoor play space. Rebecca and Holly put together a sign-up sheet that is posted at Steppers. A copy is also made available here to give you a sense of what we are looking for. Please review and let us know if you have a resource for materials and/or time to help us build. A Planning Meeting is scheduled for May 2nd, with Work Days on May 21st and Saturday, June 1st. Ask questions here and others who attended the meeting last week, please offer your perspective on our efforts. Thanks to Carin Lilly, for helping with first sketches and notes from our meeting. They are available for review in the school (located on the bulletin board opposite the kitchen table). Cheers, Liz
