I'm so happy to be spending more and more time outside with the kids. Last week I spent a morning tilling the ground, planting new grass seeds and covering with hay. There was plenty of hay left over to play with too. It's fun to see how the hay changed the landscape of the yard and its fun to watch the children find ways to incorporate the material into their dramas and explorations. Outdoor curriculum is equally important as indoor activities. Dramatic play, like the farmers Market asks children to exercise their imagination, cooperate as a group, invent scenarios, and think abstractly as they use outdoor materials to represent their thoughts: berry pies, watermelon cookies and pancakes to name a few. Children get much needed gross motor time and work large muscles pumping water, carrying buckets of stuff around the yard and up and down the ramps. Children are engaged in conversation, problem-solving and turn taking. Enjoy these two little peeks into this day!

I purchased a couple of grain mills or the children to use at school to make flour for our bread and Mickey Cake. Here is a first little peak at their work: |
