Here are some notes on a few of the things I've been working on with the kids. The upload process messed up my PowerPoint format but I think its readable. Enjoy! Liz

I want to share an overview of the things we've been working on with the children this last while. Here are some photos with some simple notes. THE MOTH VISIT Recently, Charlie stumbled across a big moth resting on the ground. Heidi and Charlie called others over to marvel at this beauty. The moth was so still, children questioned whether it was alive or not. We decided to give the moth lots of space and speak in quiet voices. We eventually settled on sitting on crates and singing sweet songs to sooth and encourage the moth to fly. It did, for a brief minute and then landed beside Jojo's feet. It was time for lunch so we had to leave nature take its own course of action without our help. In the afternoon we noticed the moth was gone? ![]() FORTS/SHELTERS I've been building forts/shelters as a context for play both inside and outside of the school. I like the sandbox fort, which Rachel also helped to create, because it invites children to sit down and work in small groups. Outdoors the shelters serve as a stage for show, a quiet place to read, as well as for dramatic play like "Pet Shop". LEGOS: The children have taken a very big interest in legos this year. We kept them stored in a tub under the couch and pulled them out daily for exploration. Then due to increasing interest we offered two tubs of legos. It made sense to devote an area of the school for continued access and construction so I set up the legos in the sensory table area, adding the green rug for comfort. Note the small fort under the sensory table. Its a great space for one or two children to have in intimate exchange. CUTTING THE GRASS I noticed that the grass was growing quite long (in patches) in the backyard and invited the children to use scissors to cut the grass. The children took their work quite seriously and the cuttings were used for their dramatic play (soups, stews etc). I shaped some grass into bouquets where Mila and Felix volunteered to distribute them to friends and even offer some to Rachel to use as centerpieces for our lunch table. WATER PLAY We love using the water pump and hose. On our hot days I like to offer a foot soak experience as a time to sit, relax, and talk with the children helping them and myself to cool down. BREAD Bread-making is a whole morning affair starting with the the mixing and milling of ingredients and then cleaning-up! Clean up often involves lots of bubble, water play and even shaving cream. Bread day is a multi-sensory experience! CLAY
I enjoy regularly offering clay as a medium of exploration. On this day I set it up outside: |
